Paul Dimmick tells of the moment of Huon Bush Retreats inceptionWe had already purchased the top of Mount Misery and applied conservation covenants to protect the natural values forever. Now we wanted to find the best way to reach to the summit. Although the covenant stated that the mountain top would never be built on, we wanted to find an enjoyable route for walking access. That morning, we had climbed the mountain from the north face and lunched at the top enjoying the views of the Wellington, Snowy and Hartz Ranges. As we descended the southern slopes, the trees suddenly parted and we found ourselves standing on the edge of a small grassy cliff top.
The land dropped 40 metres below us, rising again on the other side of the gully. Here was a rainforest of sassafras, dogwood, myrtle. Was that a hidden waterfall we could hear somewhere amongst the trees? Towering 60 metres above was a trio of Eucalyptus regnans trees. As we stood in awe of the scene before us, an eagle soared in and landed on one of the regnans. “Wouldn’t it be great if we could buy this and protect it forever.” I thought. Thirty minutes later we arrived at the public road and were walking out the gate. I turned around for one last look at the rainforest gully still just visible in the distance behind us. There on the gate was a “For Sale” sign. Huon Bush Retreats would soon be a reality... |
