Things to do in Autumn south from Hobart, Tasmania

Now that the summer crowds have left, there are no ques at the attractions and plenty of good deals on accommodation. Experience Autumn in Tasmania's south: Hobart, Huon Valley, Channel, Bruny Island and Far South. This is the season for the freshest apples, and spectacular forest fungi.

Tasmanian Weather Patterns in Autumn

The equal mix of daylight and night time hours provide a great balance for some short outdoor activities followed by a romantic evening cuddled in front of the wood fire. A typical 6 day Tasmanian Autumn weather cycle goes something like this:
  • Partly cloudy sky, gentle breeze, 15 - 18 degrees max. Cold clear night with spectacular stars.
  • Mostly blue sky, calm breeze, 17 - 20 degrees max. Cold clear night with spectacular stars.
  • Mostly blue sky, calm breeze, 19 - 21 degrees max.
  • Cold change to moderate westerly winds, 12 - 15 degrees max. A few few hours of rain.
  • Mostly cloudy sky, gentle breeze, 15 - 17 degrees max. A few showers. At night, the clouds acting as a blanket, stopping it getting cold.
  • Clouds clearing to a mostly blue sky, gentle breeze, 16 - 19 degrees max. Cold clear night with spectacular stars.
  • Generally repeats on a cycle of 5 to 7 days.

Natures Autumn Changes

This is Fungi season. Enjoy the spectacular miniature displays on several walks that visit wet forests:
  • Mt Misery Walk, 3 hours return, starts at Huon Bush Retreats
  • Mystery Creek Cave Walk, 1.5 hours return, near Buttongrass Retreat
  • Duckhole Lake Walk, 1.5 hours return, near Buttongrass Retreat

Home Hill Winery, Ranelagh

It is picking time when the grapes become ready in Autumn. With award-winning wines and a menu overflowing with fresh local and Tasmanian produce, Home Hill Winery is a premier dining destination in the Huon Valley.
The restaurant has won numerous awards for its delicious menu, with lunch served between 12pm – 3pm (please check days on website). The cellar door is open for tastings 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm.

Mount Misery ​Rainforest and Waterfall Walk

Spectacular fungi abounds in the wet forest of Mount Misery.
From the car park at Huon Bush Retreats, take the loop track, rainforest spur and waterfall spur. Most people with a moderate level of fitness will complete this walk in around 3-4 hours including breaks. Allow plenty of extra time for fungi photos.

Once we get a bit of rain, the waterfalls will return to their free flowing state.

It's Apple Season in the Huon Valley. Roadside stalls are filled with crunchy new season apples. Drop in at Willie Smiths Apple Shed, have a coffee, cider tasting, maybe lunch. Be sure to get a take home bag of organic fresh apples.

It might be cool outside but always 11 degrees year round inside the cave and 28 degrees in the naturally heated thermal pool.

Please purchase your tickets for cave tours at the Visitor Centre The cave tour takes approximately 45 minutes, this excludes self drive travel time to and from the cave which can take 20 minutes each way.
