Mount Misery Habitat Reserve Walking Tracks:

about 50 minutes south from Hobart

Oldgrowth and rainforest, sub-alpine heathland, a mountaintop and small waterfall. Day visitors are welcome but ideally stay a night or two nearby so you have plenty of time to relax, explore and experience nature. Both track sections are well constructed and zigzag through the sometimes steep terrain. Interpretive panels describe the Aboriginal, early European and current uses and environmental practices.

How much does it cost to walk
 the Mount Misery Track?

This walking track is privately constructed and zigzag through the sometimes steep terrain. It cost about $80,000 to construct and has around $1200 per year ongoing maintenance costs. Access to walking tracks is covered by your tariff if you are an overnight guest at Huon Bush Retreats. Why is it called Mount Misery?

Place Names Tasmania offers the following official info:
Nomenclature Number: 9307G
Place Name: Mount Misery
Stage: Confirmed
Feature Type: Mountain
Name Type: Name
Status: Normal
Locality: Lucaston, Ranelagh
Municipality: Huon Valley
Background: Card Reference: NM009307# Mount Misery:
Early name possibly Pisgahs Heights - See exploration, New Norfolk to Huon (Tracks).
External File Reference: D/482

A more relevant explanation might be as follows:
  • Tasmania's "miserable" weather often comes from the southwest.
  • Due to Orographic effects, as the moist southwest airflow climbs the western slopes of Mt Misery, clouds develop over the summit.
  • These clouds can be seen from Huonville and provide a 30 minute advance warning of approaching miserable weather.

The rainforest area on the Mount Misery Walk, has escaped fire for about 300 - 500 years. This has allowed the rainforest species to reach the canopy. As the old eucalyptus trees adjoining this area die from old age, the rainforest will slowly expand.

Interpretive panels telling some of the Aboriginal history of the area, are placed along the track.
