Corinda is a stately Victorian mansion surrounded by extensive gardens within a short walking distance to Hobart’s city centre and waterfront. The owners won a National Trust Preservation award for the restoration of Corinda in 1995.
Nestled within the grounds of Corinda are our delightful original outbuildings, The Coach House, the Servants Quarters and the Gardeners’ Cottage. These quaint buildings have been faithfully restored, furnished with an array of interesting antiques and converted into fully self-contained cottages. Each cottage has a fully equipped kitchen and laundry, and stylish bathroom featuring rare period plumbing fixtures. Cosiness is guaranteed with a combination of electric and wood-fired heaters. Interesting collections of antiques and sumptuous fabrics form the backdrop to every ‘mod-con’ imaginable (e.g. television, microwave, hairdryers, CD players, hot water bottles and so on) Corinda’s historic outbuildings are now delightful self-contained cottages. Awaken to the sound of birdsong, then take a stroll across the cobbled courtyard into the extensive gardens, just a short walk from the Hobart CBD. A welcome breakfast hamper is included in the tariff, as are regular towel and linen changes. Should you wish the apartment to be serviced daily, an additional fee applies. Servicing includes replenishing of breakfast supplies, full clean of apartment including beds, towels, floors, washing up and so on. Corinda's gardens are a real delight. Established in the early 1880s, several of the trees and the garden walls date from this period. Pleached Linden trees and hedges of English Box and Yew featuring elegant topiary shapes create charming formal enclosed areas each with their own colour scheme. Corinda’s Cottages represent the ultimate in privacy, style and convenience.

Corindas is situated about half a kilometre from the old Campbell Street court and gaol. The land was originally part of a convict-run vegetable garden, and the garden wall dates from this period. A cottage was built on the site in the 1850’, which became the servants’ quarters of the main building when it was built in 1880.
The larger parterre is enclosed by pleached Linden trees. The flower beds have been colour co-ordinated to create harmony and tranquility in the garden, with English Box Topiary featuring native animals creating a uniquely Australian touch. Alfred Crisp, the builder, was a wealthy timber merchant and son of a convict. He later became Lord Mayor of Hobart. After Alfred died, his daughter lived on in the house until about 1930. The property then became a boarding house before reverting to a private residence in 1980. The cottages have been meticulously and tastefully restored and are furnished with an interesting collection of antiques. Close attention to the historical detailing of both the buildings and surrounding formal gardens will delight those travellers interested in Tasmania’s heritage. The current owners, Matthew Ryan and Wilmar Bouman, have restored the property and its gardens and have converted the historic outbuildings into self-contained cottages. They owners won a National Trust Preservation award for the restoration of Corinda in 1995. |
