Faithfully restored colonial cottages

Picture
Corinda is a stately Victorian mansion surrounded by extensive gardens within a short walking distance to Hobart’s city centre and waterfront. The owners won a National Trust Preservation award for the restoration of Corinda in 1995.

Nestled within the grounds of Corinda are our delightful original outbuildings, The Coach House, the Servants Quarters and the Gardeners’ Cottage. These quaint buildings have been faithfully restored, furnished with an array of interesting antiques and converted into fully self-contained cottages.

Each cottage has a fully equipped kitchen and laundry, and stylish bathroom featuring rare period plumbing fixtures. Cosiness is guaranteed with a combination of electric and wood-fired heaters. Interesting collections of antiques and sumptuous fabrics form the backdrop to every ‘mod-con’ imaginable (e.g. television, microwave, hairdryers, CD players, hot water bottles and so on) Corinda’s historic outbuildings are now delightful self-contained cottages.

Awaken to the sound of birdsong, then take a stroll across the cobbled courtyard into the extensive gardens, just a short walk from the Hobart CBD. A welcome breakfast hamper is included in the tariff, as are regular towel and linen changes. Should you wish the apartment to be serviced daily, an additional fee applies. Servicing includes replenishing of breakfast supplies, full clean of apartment including beds, towels, floors, washing up and so on.

Corinda's gardens are a real delight. Established in the early 1880s, several of the trees and the garden walls date from this period. Pleached Linden trees and hedges of English Box and Yew featuring elegant topiary shapes create charming formal enclosed areas each with their own colour scheme.

Corinda’s Cottages represent the ultimate in privacy, style and convenience.

Spectacular formal garden

Corindas is situated about half a kilometre from the old Campbell Street court and gaol. The land was originally part of a convict-run vegetable garden, and the garden wall dates from this period. A cottage was built on the site in the 1850’, which became the servants’ quarters of the main building when it was built in 1880.

The larger parterre is enclosed by pleached Linden trees. The flower beds have been colour co-ordinated to create harmony and tranquility in the garden, with English Box Topiary featuring native animals creating a uniquely Australian touch.

Alfred Crisp, the builder, was a wealthy timber merchant and son of a convict. He later became Lord Mayor of Hobart. After Alfred died, his daughter lived on in the house until about 1930. The property then became a boarding house before reverting to a private residence in 1980.

The cottages have been meticulously and tastefully restored and are furnished with an interesting collection of antiques. Close attention to the historical detailing of both the buildings and surrounding formal gardens will delight those travellers interested in Tasmania’s heritage.

The current owners, Matthew Ryan and Wilmar Bouman, have restored the property and its gardens and have converted the historic outbuildings into self-contained cottages. They owners won a National Trust Preservation award for the restoration of Corinda in 1995.

Mt Wellington Park

Hobart's guardian peak, Wellington Park sweeps up from the city's suburban fringe to the Pinnacle.  With a sealed road to the summit, and an extensive network of walking tracks and fire trails, there's a range of activities for every visitor - bush walking, mountain bike riding, cross country skiing, orienteering, picnics, barbecues and sightseeing from the many spectacular vantage points.

Clear, fresh mountain water from the North West Bay River catchment on the south-east face of Mt Wellington provides a quarter of Hobart's drinking water supply, and the original Mountain Park was first set aside to protect this precious resource.

Though close to the sea, this is a 1270m alpine peak, with the chance of extreme weather conditions at any time of the year.  Choose a bright, clear day for the best views - from the summit, you can follow the sweep of the Derwent through the city to the sea, and gaze over towards World Heritage Area wilderness....

Read about Hobart on Wikipedia

Hobart is the state capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. The city has a greater area population of about 220,000. Located in the state's south-east on the estuary of the Derwent River, the skyline is dominated by Mount Wellington at 1,271 metres high.

Hobart has a mild temperate oceanic climate. The highest temperature recorded was 40.8 °C and the lowest was −2.8 °C.  During the summer it has the most hours of daylight of any Australian city, with 15.2 hours on the summer solstice.

Hobart supports a huge tourist industry. Visitors come to the city to explore its historic inner suburbs and nationally acclaimed restaurants and cafes, as well as its vibrant music and nightlife culture. Tourists also come to visit the massive weekly market in Salamanca Place, as well as to use the city as a base from which to explore the rest of Tasmania.

The busy seaport, notably serves as the home port for various Antarctic activities including Australian and French Antarctic expeditions and the Sea Shepherd marine conservation society. The city is also a hub for Cruise ships during the summer months with up to 40 Cruise ships docking during the course of the season.

Hobart was the birthplace of The Greens political party and the Wilderness Society.

The city supports many industries, including breweries such as Cascade manufactures many different beers exported nationally with its premium and boutique beers being found in Europe, as well as smaller breweries around the city. One notable business in the city is the Cadbury chocolate factory which makes most of the Cadbury's chocolate for the Southern Hemisphere.

Fascinating, sometimes confronting MONA

Museum of Old and New Art - MONA opened in Hobart in January 2011. It houses a collection that ranges from ancient Egyptian mummies to some of the world’s most infamous and thought-provoking contemporary art. The building’s subterranean design and the owner’s unconventional and challenging curatorial approach make it a must-see for any visitor to Australia.

MONA takes a different approach to interpretation: there are no labels or wall texts. Instead, visitors are given a touch-screen device, which is sensitive to their location in the museum – showing them works in their proximity. Called the ‘O’, it allows visitors to select the level of information they ...
