Three days luxury camping in
Tasmania's Southwest Wilderness
For 3 days and 2 nights we will show you one of Tasmania’s most amazing and pristine wilderness areas, where there are no roads or signs of civilisation. You will be accommodated at our luxury private camp, located in the forest, on the shores of Bathurst Harbour. This camp has no public walking track access, and is completely exclusive.
The Southwest National Park is over 4500 sq km, and the Port Davey/ Bathurst Harbour Marine Reserve is three times the size of Sydney Harbour. During your time in this World Heritage listed wilderness, you will be able to take a walk on the wild side of Tasmania, without the usual hardship that is associated with visiting such a remote wilderness area. Access to the South West Wilderness camp is by a magnificent flight, in a twin engine Islander aircraft landing at Melaleuca. During your flight you will witness the grandeur of this lost world and see some of the icons of Tasmania’s world renowned wilderness such as Federation Peak, The Western Arthur Range, Precipitous Bluff and Tasmania’s rugged South Coast. Upon at arrival at Melaleuca, you will board a vessel to access the camp and to explore the magnificent waterways of the Port Davey Marine Reserve, with its 800 metre mountains rising from the sea. Your experienced guides will look after you, prepare your meals and give you a thorough interpretation of this spectacular wilderness area. There will be opportunities to see the rare and endangered Orange Bellied Parrots, visit Aboriginal middens and caves, explore the remote waterways via your private boat, walk on untouched beaches, see wildlife or even climb a mountain if you want to. All walks are graded easy to moderate. This ultimate experience gives you an opportunity to see untouched wilderness, in one of the worlds last remaining temperate rainforests. You will breathe the cleanest air in the world, while staying in comfortable accommodation, enjoying quality Tasmanian food and wine. Flying over Hobart's eastern suburbs and the Derwent River, we will make our way down the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, past Recherche Bay to Tasmania’s most southern point, South East Cape. At this point we leave civilisation behind and enter the vast South West Wilderness by following the South Coast Track all the way to Melaleuca.
You'll land at the remote airstrip at Melaleuca, originally a tin mine and the former home of the pioneer Deny King.On the ground at Melaleuca, you'll have the opportunity to explore this special area, potentially having the opportunity to see the rare and endangered Orange-Bellied Parrot. We will also get an opportunity to see the home of Deny King as well as take an interpretive journey along the Needwonnee Walk, an award winning Aboriginal interpretive experience. After morning tea, your pilot will take you to one of our boats and we will head out to Bathurst Harbour.
Bathurst Harbour, is a marine reserve and this waterway is unique as it is shallow, yet due to the unique structure of the water, through a combination of salt/fresh water, low nutrients and darkness due to the tannin from the Buttongrass plains, the underwater life is unique and found no where else in the world. You will get to view the underwater world through underwater cameras which our boats carry
You will see the remote Celery Top Islands, take walks in the wilderness and breathe the cleanest air in the world. We will pick a remote location for lunch, this may be a beach with no footprints on it, or a quiet cove and we'll stroll up an adjacent hill, which will give an amazing photo opportunity. No matter where we go, you will get an opportunity to experience untouched wilderness, away from any distractions or signs of civilisation
Late in the afternoon, we'll reboard our aircraft, and return to Cambridge Airport, flying via spectacular Federation Peak, and Mt Picton, over Huonville and Hobart City.
The tour is approximately 8 hours in duration. Our price includes: lunch including wine and morning tea/coffee, boat trips and a ground tour at Melaleuca, scenic flights to and from Melaleuca, Departs daily, weather permitting.
