The list has been curated by Tourism Australia's ambassador and beach expert Brad Farmer AM, He is an environmentalist who has dedicated his life to conserving Australia's coastline, so it's hard to imagine a better Australian to curate the list. Cockle Creek is a real standout in it's protection of the natural values of Tasmania's Southwest National Park. Drive to Cockle Creek, the southernmost point of Australia’s most southerly road and enter the Southwest National Park. (You will need a park entry pass). South Cape Bay is accessed via the eastern end of the 7 day South Coast Track from Melaleuca and Port Davey. Cockle Creek to South Cape Bay takes most people about 2 hours each way, plus maybe an hour enjoying the view, so take your lunch and make a day of it. Fairly level and a well made track make this a good beginners’ walk. Be sure to have strong shoes and weatherproof clothing at all times of year. Cockle Creek is a long drive from Hobart. Instead of wasting half your day driving, maybe give yourself a full day to enjoy Cockle Creek by staying 2 nights close by. You can stay just up the road in a cosy self contained eco-cabin at at Buttongrass Retreat, Australia's southern most accommodation. Also, not too far away is the luxury of The Little Seed Studio, an hour north at Franklin. | |
